The Brooklyn International High School is an English Language Learners high school. It is located in Brooklyn serving New York students living in the five New York City boroughs. The teaching philosophy focuses on real world content and projects-based learning. The students and teachers collaborate on experiential and interdisciplinary projects. The student body is very diverse representing over 30 different countries. [1][2][3][4]
Academics[edit]
Brooklyn International High School teaches new immigrants English. It offers a strong arts and science program. BIHS is a member of the International Network. A network of schools that prepare immigrant students in English Language skills and access to quality education. The educational needs of math, English language arts, science, history, and Social Studies are taught. The school has about 352 students with a student to teacher ratio of 14 to 1. According to New York state test scores 82% of the students are proficient in reading. The students develop language, intellectual and collaborative interdisciplinary projects. In the 11th grade the students do an internship that develops real work experience. The students at BIHS have access to a computer lab and one-to-one laptop. [5][6]
BIHS curriculum is structured with four student and teachers working in interdisciplinary teams. The four teams are;
- 9th and 10th Grade - Balance
- 9th and 10th Grade - Journey
- 11th Grade - Growth
- 12th Grade - Be the Change
In 2016 BeamWorks started its' first in-school FabLab at Brooklyn International High School. FabLab is an advanced digital fabrication laboratory using cutting-edge tools and resources. The fabLab was created by the Beam Center. It provides a non-traditional hands-on learning model. Learning by linking fields of art, design, and technology. Which relates to science, math, and engineering. The fablab uses laser cutter, 3D printer, robotic kits, sewing machines, computers and software. STEM is an integral part of BIHS's curriculum. [7][8]
