To Whom It May Concern,

Re: War on Seniors

My name is Florence M. Rice. I am 95 years old, and a long time Harlem resident. I am the founder and President of Harlem Consumers Education Council, Inc.  I am concerned about what is happening to seniors. It is a war on seniors.

We are in a crisis situation in housing being forced out of our apartments and homes. We are being put into nursing homes that do not care about us. We are victims of elder abuse on all fronts, across the board. Many seniors are being made homeless, and we need dialogue with the powers to be that are suppose to represent us. We are voters.

I was forced out of my apartment in 2004, by what was called a constructive eviction, and sent on a roller coaster ride,  in-and-out of the courts to get back into my apartment. Which was gutted and made uninhabitable. My situation, like so many other seniors are done illegally. Where is the legal protection to protect seniors?

We have launched  the “Senior Citizen Appreciation Campaign” for the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, and October of each year. This campaign is to honor seniors’ contributions and accomplishments that have helped to shape a better world for all of us.  This campaign will also be a platform for dialogue to work together in dealing with critical issues, and concerns that relate to seniors. We want to see corrective actions documented, and put in place to protect seniors.

We are in need of your support and know-how to help seniors, and soon to become seniors to have a better life. We want to see progress and projects that insure that we are making progress in improving the quality of life of all seniors.

Please let us know how you or your organization can be resourceful  and helpful in this endeavor to improve the lives of seniors.

Sincerely,

Florence M. Rice

JEROME JOHNSON - COMMUNITY SOLAR ENERGY DEMONSTRATION HOUSE

Update: Elder Jerome Johnson has passed away. We are taken aback with sadness. There was no support for his plight in continuing to do community work. He was very angry going thru the ageing process, and his dream of building community was deferred, and ignored. It is so sad how so many elders are treated. Especially, elders like Mr. Johnson who gave so much. His wish was to have the solar house made into a museum.  Jerome Johnson! J erome Johnson is 86 years of age. He exemplifies our society’s disregard towards our ageing population. How our ageing population is treated and ignored. As throwaway items in society. Where elder citizens are told you are old and youth is new). They are not appreciated, and their life long work is disrespected and in many cases seen as irrelevant.    Mr. Johnson is a People’s pioneer in how-to create and invent for the everyday citizen and community. He developed the solar cooker in the 70s, and created a demonstrati...

Michaela DePrince.

I am still finding it difficult to wrap my mind around the loss of Michaela DePrince at 29 years old. A game changer in the Ballet world from Sierra Leone, Harlem to the world.  This morning my take was through her life, a lesson. The lesson whatever you are doing, learning, practicing 'to make it your own' whether you are young or old. Be positive in your pursuit or pursuits.
