How poorly we have prepared the youth for the many challenges
they are facing, issues that are local, national, and global. Do we really know
how and what to prepare them for? We have created a very individualist society
which does not help them in regards to thinking and acting collectively. There
was some hope in 2008. History was made in that young people went to the polls
in record numbers to elect the youthful Barack Obama for President. It is
imperative that young people go to the polls again. The future belongs to them
and what the future will look like - they must be a part of it. Voting is a
collective responsibility and activity. If the youth do not come out and vote
like they did in 2008 it will be a step backwards.
During my youth and early adult life the Republicans were in power. It was a very long road for an Obama to appear and get elected. For so many years we would use the word apathetic to describe the public (the masses). It seems as though the bulk of the voters who decided who became president in the U.S. of America came from the conservative camp. It was a blessing in the 2008 presidential election that a change did occur in terms of a new voting bloc was created. A new bloc came to the polls, the youth, marginalized ethnic groups, women, labor, etc. This is what we hoped for – for decades for this bloc of voters to make the choice for who became president. It was always amazing how a small minority from small towns decided who became president because too many people were too ill informed or apathetic to get out and vote. The conservatives had an edge. They did not have to spend lots of time and money getting their ranks to go to the polls. They know the importance of going to the polls.
It is important that we all step up to the plate and get out
and vote for President Obama. If we have some issues with him let us bring them
up front after he is elected. WE must not go backwards to the days when who
elected who would be president was middle aged small town white Americans.
